Forward Osmosis Systems
Water stress is showing itself as one of the most critical problems of our world day by day. Therefore, it is emerging as the most important problem of the 21st century with the increasing population and decreasing clean water resources. At this point, MEMSİS INC. We provide services on forward osmosis systems, which is another advanced wastewater treatment technology.
What is Forward Osmosis?
In the principle of forward osmosis systems, there are liquids at certain concentrations (osmotic pressures) on both sides of the semipermeable membrane. Thus, diffusion of water occurs spontaneously across a semipermeable membrane with a difference in concentration. Unlike the high pressure Reverse Osmosis (RO) process, it does not require an external pump or hydraulic pressure. Therefore, forward osmosis systems are more suitable for filtering highly polluted liquids. In addition, simple backwashing removes fillers and restores membrane performance.
In nature, forward osmosis in trees is actually a natural process that takes place in our environment every day. It enables plants to carry water from their root systems to their leaves. Most organisms in nature like this move water into and out of cells by forward osmosis.
Working Principle
We use advanced osmosis systems as selective barriers between aqueous solutions in water and wastewater treatment applications. The membrane has structurally thin, porous and permeable materials. These selective properties are generally dependent on the membrane pore diameters to prevent the contaminants and parameters from passing through the membrane. Wastewater enters from one side of the membrane and creates osmotic pressure thanks to a denser fluid than itself. With this pressure, it is obtained as purified water from the other side depending on the membrane properties.
Forward osmosis systems are ideal for filtration of wastewater with high TDS. It also plays a role in industrial applications where liquids need to be concentrated, apart from wastewater.
What are the Advantages of Forward Osmosis System?
You can see some of the most important advantages of advanced osmosis systems, which is one of the new generation technologies in water and wastewater treatment, below. You can also view a sample advanced osmosis system image below.
- Low energy requirement since high pressure pump is not used,
- Easy-to-apply washing with a fully automatic system,
- Low operating cost with high membrane life,
- Low chemical consumption.
What are the wastewaters that can be used in an Forward Osmosis System?
Some wastewater types using forward osmosis systems are listed below. The most obvious common features of these wastewaters are that they contain high salinity. Therefore, it is difficult and costly wastewater to treat.
- Sea waters with high salt content,
- Mining wastewater,
- Wastewaters originating from petroleum and petroleum products,
- Leachate,
- Food industry wastewater.
